The Concessionary Travel Scheme which started earlier this year has been hugely popular, allowing everyone over 60 free off peak local bus travel anywhere in England and Wales.
The Government gives a grant to all councils to allow them to reimburse the bus operators who actually provide the service. Here in Lancashire, all the local authorities pool their Travel Scheme money as there is greater demand for bus travel in some areas than others. It ‘s the fairest way.
In Lancashire, the costs are 51% higher than the same period last year. (CHECK) There has been a big increase in trips which used to be half fare and are now free. Lots of people are heading for the coast on a day out – and quite right too!
I want to make sure the scheme is adequately funded and I am pressing Ministers to make sure councils are not short changed, with Council Tax payers making up the difference.
