What the media says about me...

"Pendle MP, Gordon Prentice, is not one of the Government’s favourite backbenchers. That’s because he does not bite his lip or sit on his hands when Ministers propose to do something, or refuse to do something, and he disagrees with them."

A planning application is expected to be submitted “within a couple of weeks” by the Birmingham based disaster relief charity, Islamic Help, seeking permission to allow part of the huge Brierfield Mills complex to be used as a school.

The charity caused uproar with its early plans for a 5,000 place boarding school for Muslim girls.

The new proposal is thought to be for a faith school for 100-150 girls. They are looking to move the Ghausia Girls High School in Cross Street, Nelson, to the new site in time to open in September 2010. The charity’s thinking was revealed in a letter from Pendle Council’s Chief Executive, Stephen Barnes, to local MP, Gordon Prentice. The MP met the trustees of Islamic Help at Westminster last month.  Speaking from Nelson, the MP commented: “Having bought this giant site, the charity seems to have no clear view of what to do with it – other than move the girls school up there.”  “The timetable seems to me to be extremely tight. I understand the land is zoned for employment uses and any proposed change would have to be thoroughly explored with proper consultation and with no corners cut.”  The MP added: “There is also a suggestion that part of the site could be turned into an hotel. That’s a new one on me.”
